Description

Balletto Chardonnay
Tasting Notes: This light-straw colored wine is both complex and elegant, showing its cool-climate heritage with concentrated flavors and bright citrus acidity. It opens with warm spices, tangerine and lemon aromas and fresh fruit. The various aromas overlap and mingle, producing an ever-changing bouquet that is the hallmark of our Chardonnay. Oak has been used sparingly to enhance the wine with subtle toasted and vanilla aromas, rather than dominate the aroma profile.
The texture and balance are spot on, making it one of those wines that draws you in for another sip. The finish lasts for several minutes and is both tart and creamy with lingering lemon and creme brulee flavors.

This wine is easy to enjoy at the dinner table. It has the rare quality of being lush and refreshing at the same time and will enhance a wide variety of foods. Because of its tartness and texture, it will pair well with salty foods like aged cheeses, roasted sardines and oysters. It can also be paired with foods based on its creamy side and compliment rich soups like butternut squash and potato leek, or a wide variety of roasted white meats and vegetables.

Vineyard: The grapes for this wine were grown predominately at our Occidental Road Vineyard that surrounds our winery and tasting room near Sebastopol. In 2009, we also blended in a small lot of Chardonnay from our Burnside Road vineyard to bring up the blends natural acidity and add more bright citrus tones. Together they made a complete wine.

Soils: We have three different soil types on which our Chardonnay grapes are grown: Wright Sandy Loam, Blucher Fine Sandy Loam \. Goldridge Fine Sandy Loam.

Winemaking Notes: This wine was completely fermented in 60-gallon French oak barrels (35% of which were new). Every barrel was stirred every two weeks for the first seven months and then left to settle before bottling. While time consuming, the frequent stirring helped give the wine its rich texture and mouth-feel which developed as the spent yeast cells slowly degraded and released enriching molecules into the wine. This traditional practice has been used for hundreds of years to enhance the texture and weight of Chardonnay.
