In the 1980's, when Merlot was beginning its ascent as a popular varietal, Ed Sbragia and his team made various experimental lots to determine whether Beringer should offer it. At that time, Ed was not impressed with any of the wines and swore never to make a Merlot unless he could find the right fruit. The discovery in 1987 of Bancroft Ranch on Howell Mountain and its dense, ripe, concentrated Merlot was the key to changing Ed's mind, but because there was only one vineyard, the production was always very limited. Since then, Beringer's viticulture team, led by Vineyard Manager Bob Steinhauer, has learned an enormous amount about how and where to grow Merlot-which clones, trellising techniques, crop load and levels of ripeness yield complex fruit with concentrated aromas and flavors.
