K Vintners Motor City Kitty Syrah
Coming from an older vineyard planted next to Dick Bushey's Bushey Vineyard, Smith's M C K Syrah (this stands for Motor City Kitty) is inky colored and off-the-charts good, with layers of black fruits, olive tapenade, crushed rock and pepper. Massive, full-bodied, decadent and voluptuous, it's certainly not for those craving lightweight aromas and flavors and dishes out immense pleasure. I think they almost give this away (it's priced somewhere around 35 bucks), but don't let the price fool you, this is an incredible wine! As usual, this was a massive lineup by Washington's wild man, Charles Smith. Despite the larger-than-life persona, these wines are dead serious and are always some of the best I'm able to taste from the state. All of the Rhone varieties see 100% whole cluster, native fermentations and aging in mostly neutral French oak. At the top end, both theRoyal City Syrah and Klein Syrah flirted with perfection, but the whole lineup is stacked with both quality and value. I think the are slightly superior to the but both of these vintages are strong here.
