Nickel and Nickel
State Ranch is located northeast of the town of Yountville. The 23-acre vineyard
is divided into two parcels by State Lane Road and consists of both older and
younger vines. Many excellent wines are produced from this area, in part due
to the rocky, loam soil which has excellent drainage throughout the year. The
vines, as well as the clusters, are moderate in size and the vineyard gets full sun
throughout the day. As the young vines mature, we will be harvesting many
different clones to make the final wine. Nickel ' Nickel selects fruit from 11
acres of the vineyard.
HARVEST NOTES
In, cloud cover in the winter and early spring delayed the year's growing
season, but above average rainfall filled the reservoirs. Bloom this year occurred
in June, which is the latest on record. We farmed the vineyard as we normally
do, opening up the canopy to offer speckled light without exposing the fruit to
sunburn. A cool summer without any real heat spikes offered a slow ripening
period, and the fruit looked beautiful on the vines. Without the extra heat,
sugar levels remained low, but flavors developed nicely and we harvested the
entire vineyard in mid-October when flavor and tannin development peaked.
SENSORY EVALUATION
The State Ranch Cabernet has a beautiful garnet color with bright,
enticing aromas and flavors. Juicy berry fruits, chocolate, vanilla, dried herb
and char blend together in harmony on a soft, velvety texture. The tannins are
incredibly supple and long, adding to the warmth and elegance of the wine.
